What is Phlebotomy?

Phlebotomy is a medical procedure that involves drawing blood from a patient’s body so it can be analyzed in a laboratory. Instruction is often given by a doctor and it  is a routine procedure taught to a registered nurse during their medical training. However, with the increased observance of strict safety standards employed by hospitals , phlebotomy is now recognized as a specialized function and in most cases an individual will need to obtain a phlebotomy certification before practicing.

How do I Get Certification?

Before you become a certified phlebotomist technician, you first need to undergo special training and hone the skills required to obtain a phlebotomy certification. Instructive courses will teach you about human anatomy and how to communicate and empathize with your patients. In order to become a phlebotomist and obtain a phlebotomy certification, you will need to do the following:

Step 1- Determine what are the prerequisites for phlebotomists in the local state you residing in or wish to work in. They vary from state to state.

Step 2- Search for phlebotomy certification courses in universities or vocational schools in your area that meet the criteria in Step 1. Cross reference each institute with the Department of Health and make sure it is an approved phlebotomy certification course

Step 3- Complete your certification courses as required. Courses vary in duration from 4 months to 2 years.

Step 4- Armed with the necessary knowledge and skill, you should now take the phlebotomy professional certification exams from an accredited examining authority to receive your phlebotomy certification.
