Many of the phlebotomy classes in Rochester have been discontinued pending review. Rochester General Hospital, once the leader in phlebotomy training, discontinued its course offerings in 2010, and its website states the program is not being offered until further notice. There are several other programs in the area that have ended as well, making it harder to find adequate phlebotomy training.
The Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Center for Workforce Development offers a lecture-based, hands-on phlebotomy training that covers phlebotomy and laboratory services. During the program, which lasts 10-11 weeks, students are taught the fundamentals for phlebotomy, as well as cover legal and ethical matters, and employment skills development to aid in the job finding process. Students must have a high school diploma or GED, and tuition is set at $2,000, plus the cost of books. Classes include 124 hours of instruction during evening and weekend sessions.
Bryant & Stratton College’s phlebotomy certification can be taken with the EKG Technology certification or independently, and there is no prerequisite for applicants. Course instruction includes introduction to phlebotomy; medical law and ethics; medical terminology; asepsis and infection control; first aid; CPR; blood collection procedures and safety; non-blood specimen collection; and occupation communication during 170 lecture hours and two 40-hour internships. Phlebotomy certification is provided by the National Healthcareer Association and can be completed in one month including a clinical externship.
