Phlebotomy Training in Rochester, New York

Several facilities and institutions offer phlebotomy training in Rochester, N.Y.Students should consider the type of class in which they want to enroll, whether it be in a community center, college, or hospital environment. Each settings can have advantages over the other learning experiences, but it is up to each student to find an education that best suits his or her learning needs.

Required Skills for N.Y. Phlebotomists

Phlebotomy is the action of withdrawing blood from a vein, but phlebotomists are responsible for more than just knowing where to stick a needle. Because they deal directly with blood, phlebotomists must adhere to extremely strict guidelines and regulations to avoid contamination or infection. It is also important that these individuals take safety precautions so as not to come in contact with another person’s blood. In some states, phlebotomists can also perform diagnostic procedures, and when needed, interpret results of testing and make recommendations. However, because phlebotomists are not required to be licensed in the state of New York, they may not perform procedures or tests with the specimen samples they collect. Instead, specimen samples are sent to laboratories for testing, and reports of findings are sent to an authorized healthcare professional for recommended treatments and diagnosis.

Those who want to work in the field of phlebotomy are largely employed by hospitals, but they can also find work in diagnostic laboratories and physicians’ offices. For many patients, hospitals and needles are scary encounters, which may cause them a surprising amount of anxiety. Phlebotomists must be compassionate and able to calm their patients in order to take the needed samples.

Students must have a high school diploma or GED, and tuition is set at $2,000, plus the cost of books. Classes include 124 hours of instruction during evening and weekend sessions.

Bryant & Stratton College’s phlebotomy certification can be taken with the EKG Technology certification or independently, and there is no prerequisite for applicants. Course instruction includes introduction to phlebotomy; medical law and ethics; medical terminology; asepsis and infection control; first aid; CPR; blood collection procedures and safety; non-blood specimen collection; and occupation communication during 170 lecture hours and two 40-hour internships. Phlebotomy certification is provided by the National Healthcareer Association and can be completed in one month including a clinical externship.
