Certification Requirements in CA
According to California State regulations, an individual must complete one of the following courses before pursuing a career in phlebotomy:
- Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT)
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1)
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT2)
The course will usually consist of both classroom training and practical exercises. In essence, the program will teach you theoretical knowledge of phlebotomy and provide you with hands on experience. At the end of the course you should be skilled and knowledgeable about phlebotomy and its related aspects, hopefully enough to pas the state approved exam.
Additional Requirements
- Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate or equivalent qualification
- Received a minimum of 40 hours approved classroom instruction in an approved program
- Completed a minimum of 40 hours of real training in an externship or otherwise
- Successfully completed at least 10 skin punctures
- Successfully completed at least 50 venipunctures
